“We all eat and it would be a sad waste of opportunity to eat badly.”

Quick Guide: Best Food in Limerick

If you just want the quick shortlist, start here:

This guide is for anyone trying to find the best food in Limerick.

Whenever I visit somewhere new, I end up doing the same thing most people do, scanning Google and TikTok trying to figure out where the good food spots actually are. So as a semi-Limerick local, I wanted to pull together a guide to help you find somewhere genuinely worth eating if you’re visiting the city.

The thing is, Limerick actually has some brilliant independently run spots that are local favourites, the kind of places people recommend the second someone asks “where’s good to eat?”

So this guide pulls together cafés, pubs and restaurants that are consistently well reviewed and people keep going back to.

Basically… the spots you won’t want to miss.

Canteen

26 Catherine St, Limerick City
4.4 /5 stars (374 Reviews)

Food vibe:
An aesthetic cafe great for breakfast, brunch, lunch, coffees & treats.

What they’re known for:
Canteen is a personal favourite of mine and one of those places that consistently delivers. It’s known for high-quality brunch, their own sourdough bread baked in-house, and excellent baked goods. There’s a strong emphasis on locally sourced ingredients, and it shows in the flavour.

The menu covers everything from brunch plates (hello green egg ham) to brownies, peanut butter balls, sourdough sandwiches, and specialty coffee and matcha. It attracts a nice mix of people working on laptops, friends catching up over coffee, and anyone looking for a relaxed but impressive food spot in the city.

Small details stand out too, like coffees arriving on a board with a baking powder tin filled with sugars and stirrers. Service here feels thoughtful.

What people actually love (from reviews):

After reading through Google reviews, a few themes come up again and again:

  • Friendly, welcoming staff
    • Generous portion sizes
    • Appreciation for locally sourced ingredients
    • Consistently good coffee
    • A relaxed, pleasant atmosphere

Good to know:

While reviews are overwhelmingly positive, some people mention the price point. Personally, I think it’s reasonable given the focus on local sourcing. Initiatives like Champion Green highlight that for every €1 spent with a local business, at least €2.50 goes back into Irish communities and the wider economy.

Story Café

Milk Market Area, Limerick
4.6 /5 stars (750+ reviews)

Food vibe:
Friendly, feel-good café that’s ideal for breakfast or brunch, whether you’re meeting friends, bringing family, or taking things slow in the morning.

What they’re known for:
Story Café is one of those places that comes up again and again when people talk about good food in Limerick, especially for breakfast and brunch. I’ve lost count of how many times it’s been recommended to me over the years, and the reviews back that up.

The menu leans towards classic café food done properly, from full Irish breakfasts and crepes to lighter options and solid coffee. Reviews often mention skipping hotel breakfasts altogether and heading straight here instead, which says a lot.

Even when the place is packed, staff are described as fast, efficient, and genuinely pleasant to deal with.

What people actually love (from reviews):

  • Exceptionally friendly and welcoming staff
    • Quick service, even during busy breakfast and brunch hours
    • Fresh, well-made breakfast and brunch dishes
    • Good value for money compared to similar cafés
    • A warm, cosy atmosphere that keeps people coming back

What they’re known for:
The Buttery really shines as a brunch place. It’s the kind of café you go to when you’re meeting friends and actually want to sit, chat, and make a bit of a thing out of it. Mimosas on the brunch menu help with that… ;

The Locke Bar

3 George’s Quay, Limerick City
4.6 /5 stars (5.4K reviews)

Food vibe:
Classic Irish pub energy. The kind of place where you come for dinner and end up staying for live music and a few pints. Great if you’re looking for lively pub food with atmosphere.

What they’re known for:
The Locke Bar is one of the best known pubs in Limerick and sits right beside the Abbey River in the medieval quarter. It’s a staple for both locals and visitors, partly because of the location and partly because the food is reliably good.

The menu leans into traditional Irish pub favourites. Think fish and chips, seafood chowder, burgers, and hearty comfort food. It’s exactly the kind of menu that pairs well with a pint of Guinness.

Live traditional music sessions are a big part of what makes the place memorable, giving the whole pub a buzzing atmosphere most evenings.

What people actually love (from reviews):

Looking through reviews, a few themes come up again and again:

  • The atmosphere and live music sessions
    • Fish and chips getting frequent praise
    • Friendly, energetic staff
    • Generous portions of pub classics
    • A proper “Irish pub experience” that people recommend to visitors

Good to know:

It gets busy, especially on evenings when live music is playing, so it’s worth arriving earlier if you’re hoping to grab a table for food.

The Curragower Bar & Kitchen

Clancy’s Strand, Limerick
4.6 /5 stars (1.6K reviews)

Food vibe:
A lively riverside bar and restaurant with front-row views of King John’s Castle. A strong choice for dinner, drinks, or bringing visitors who want somewhere with a bit of energy and a great setting.

What they’re known for:
The Curragower sits right on the banks of the River Shannon in Limerick’s Medieval Quarter, directly across from King John’s Castle. It’s one of those places that almost every visitor to the city ends up hearing about.

The menu leans toward high-quality gastropub food, with plenty of seafood alongside burgers, wings, and hearty mains. Fresh ingredients and local suppliers are something the kitchen emphasises, and dishes like seafood chowder, fish plates, and comfort food classics appear regularly across the menus.

Inside, the bar still has that slightly old-school pub character in parts, but the newer dining spaces and terrace give it a more modern restaurant feel.

The outdoor seating area overlooking the river and castle is a big part of the appeal, especially when the weather behaves.

What people actually love (from reviews):

After going through reviews, a few things come up repeatedly:

  • The castle and river views from the dining area
    • Seafood dishes, especially chowder and fish plates
    • Friendly, attentive staff
    • A busy, buzzing atmosphere in the evenings
    • Generous portions and well-presented dishes

Good to know:

The terrace is one of the most sought-after spots in the city during good weather. People often book it in advance during events like Riverfest, since it gives you a scenic vantage point over the river and the city for the fireworks!!!

Food vibe:
Laid-back craft brewery with great beer, great atmosphere, and surprisingly great food.

What they’re known for:
Treaty City Brewery has become a bit of a favourite among locals for craft beer, but the food deserves just as much attention.

Their toasties have developed something of a reputation. The bread is baked by Canteen, one of Limerick’s best brunch spots, and the fillings lean heavily into locally sourced ingredients.

Simple idea. Done really well.

Looking through reviews, these things come up again and again:

  • Excellent craft beers brewed on site
    • Toasties getting constant praise
    • Friendly, knowledgeable staff
    • Relaxed, welcoming atmosphere
    • A great mix of locals and visitors

Good to know:

If you’re in the city centre, it’s an easy stop between exploring the medieval quarter and heading toward the river.

Honestly, if you’re nearby… stop for a pint and a toastie.

Sexton’s

Mallow St, Limerick
4.5 /5 stars (1.3K+ reviews)

Food vibe:
Lively pub with great pizza. A solid spot if you want to grab a woodfired pizza and a pint, watch a match, or start a night out in the city.

What they’re known for:
Sexton’s has built a reputation in Limerick for its woodfired pizzas. It’s a great middle ground between a pub and a casual food spot.

The pizzas are the main draw here, with toppings ranging from classic options to slightly more interesting combinations.

I had one of the woodfired pizzas with goat’s cheese there recently before heading to the OM Unit gig in Pharmacia, along with a couple of pints, and honestly it was a solid 10/10 start to the night.

After looking through reviews, a few things come up consistently:

Food vibe:
Burger and grill restaurant. Ideal for casual dinners with friends or group nights out.

What they’re known for:
Coqbull is best known for gourmet burgers and grilled chicken dishes.

The menu leans heavily into comfort food done well. Burgers are the main attraction, but there are also wings, loaded fries, and cocktails that make it feel like a fun night-out spot.

The atmosphere tends to be lively, especially later in the evening, I haven’t visited the ‘Tequila Rooms’ section but they seem to always have events on for Twilight Thursday so could be a place to visit for when a  nice cocktail & dinner is on the cards.

Taikichi is one of the most consistently praised Asian restaurants in Limerick and a personal favourite of mine.

The menu includes sushi, ramen, bento boxes, and other Japanese comfort dishes. It’s particularly popular with students and locals looking for something different from pub food.

I personally recommend the Taikichi bento, its a personal favourite of mine. My son really enjoyed the kid bento too when we visited last.

Why I ended up writing this guide

Putting this list together reminded me how much people rely on Google and TikTok when deciding where to eat.

Most of us do the same thing without even thinking about it. We search something like food Limerick or restaurants near me, scroll through the results, check a few Google reviews, maybe watch a couple of TikToks, look at photos… and then decide where we’re going.

That mix of search results, reviews, and social media is basically how people discover local businesses now.

It’s also something I think about a lot because I work in SEO and live just outside Limerick city. My job is helping businesses show up in those searches so the right people can actually find them online.

For restaurants, cafés, shops, and service businesses, appearing in the right search results can make a huge difference. When someone searches for something like food in Limerick or restaurants near me, the businesses that appear are often the ones people end up visiting.

So while this article started as a simple list of well-reviewed places to eat in Limerick, it’s also a small example of how organic search connects people with local businesses every day.

If you’re a local business owner and want to understand how this works, you can read more about my SEO services in Limerick here, or learn a bit more about me and the work I do helping businesses grow through search.

Where can you find the best food in Limerick?

Limerick has a strong mix of cafés, pubs and restaurants. Local favourites like Story Café, The Buttery, Canteen, The Curragower and Cornstore are frequently recommended in Google reviews and by locals.

Some of the most popular brunch spots in Limerick include Story Café, The Buttery and Canteen. These cafés are known for busy brunch menus, good coffee and relaxed atmospheres.

For pub food in Limerick, places like The Locke Bar, The Curragower and Sexton’s are popular choices. They combine classic Irish pub atmosphere with strong food menus.
